Martin Mystère's memory in panel 1 is a reference to official story D'improvviso una notte.
The seventeen-faced object in panel 3 is an Ebdecahedron, but it's not the same one that was seen in "I sentieri del destino" (Martin Mystère n. 185).
And so begins the actual storyline, which is also a nod to Dc Comics' "Crisis" events.
The title of the story is a paraphrase of a title from the Transformers G1 cartoon, "Five Faces Of Darkness".
